SUMMARY

Geopolitical tensions in the Russian-Ukraine conflict and Middle East likely served as an underlying source of the past weeks increases.

Obscured reports of shelling close to critical Russian export infrastructure fuelled bullish sentiment across the wider energy complex, with key natural gas contracts being driven to the highest levels seen so far this year.

Top officials in Ukraine such as President Zelenskiy and senior adviser Mykhailo Podolyak indicated on Thursday that the ongoing incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast is part of a sanctioned military operation. Unconfirmed reports from Russian media suggest that Ukrainian forces have seized control of the Sudzha gas station which serves as a vital nomination point for much of the last remaining Russian flows into Europe. Several EU countries such as Austria and Slovakia are still very much dependent on Russian gas flowed via Ukraine and if the Sudzha station is damaged by the ongoing shelling, missile and artillery fire in the surrounding areas it could invigorate bullish sentiment at European gas hubs.

In the Middle East, Iran is still yet to engage in direct conflict with Israel after the countries leader promised ‘harsh punishment’ following the alleged assassination of a top Hamas official in Tehran. It’s unclear when or how Iran plan’s to react but uncertainty in the region likely continues to support increases to both natural gas and oil prices.

In other news, Norway’s Crown LNG has begun the initial planning process to build a Floating Storage & Regasification Unit (FSRU) off the Scottish coast near Grangemouth. FSRU’s are converted vessels that store LNG and convert it back into a gaseous state for use in the national grid, serving a role very similar to the UK’s existing Milford Haven and Isle of Grain terminals. They have become increasingly popular in Europe due to the continents efforts to diversify away from Russian gas supply following the invasion of Ukraine and the destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline. The project could be finished as soon as ‘early 2027’ with an estimated cost of £473 million.

Say 'No' to cold calling on business energy

Unfortunately, business electricity and business gas customers in the UK are bombarded with unsolicited cold calls on a daily basis.

This unscrupulous approach does not offer the business energy customer an impartial view on the market and the price offered is more often 20-30% above the current retail price for electricity or gas.

At Energy Advice Line we strongly advise customers to not accept these offers and follow our simple steps to ensure that they are not locked into an uncompetitive contract.

Join our cold calling campaign here, and spread the word to say 'no' to cold calling on business energy!
